Domino, also known as bones, men, or pieces, is a small, flat block used to play games. It is a type of gaming object that is made from rigid material such as wood, bone, or plastic and is usually twice as long as it is wide. The two ends of a domino have a pattern of dots, called spots or pips, which indicate its value. Most sets have a double-sided face that bears the identifying marks and is blank on the other side, or, like playing cards, has an identical patterned surface that is sometimes referred to as a “sleeve.” A typical domino set has about 56 tiles with eight or more pips on each end. Larger sets have more pips.
Dominoes are primarily used for positional games. In this type of game, each player takes a turn placing one domino edge to edge against another in a row, with the exposed ends matching (i.e., a one’s touch, a two’s touch two’s, etc.) If the two adjacent pips total any number that is a multiple of five, the player scores that amount. The first player to score all of their pieces wins the game.
Besides dominoes, people use them in other creative ways, such as making art installations and creating chain reactions where each domino is tipped over on top of the next to form a shape. Some domino artists even create intricate structures out of the small rectangular blocks that can be stacked together to make 3D shapes and designs.
While many of these designs are not practical for pizza delivery, Domino’s has been able to adapt some to its needs. For example, the company focuses on putting pizzerias near college campuses to reach a younger demographic, which has helped its business thrive.
In addition, Domino’s tries to listen to its customers and responds quickly when they have problems. When the company’s previous CEO David Brandon took over, he immediately put into effect new changes, such as a relaxed dress code and leadership training programs. He also spoke directly to employees to find out what was going wrong.
As for Hevesh, she tests each piece of her larger installations to ensure they work. This is important, as her largest creations can take several nail-biting minutes to fall. She also films the process in slow motion so that she can check the results for any issues and make adjustments. This is how she’s able to create the spectacular setups seen on her YouTube channel and at movie premieres, TV shows, and even at the launch of pop star Katy Perry’s album. She has also created a record for the most dominoes toppled in a circular arrangement. It has taken her nearly a decade to construct the dominoes, which weigh more than 100 pounds. The whole set-up takes about 10 hours to complete. This process helps Hevesh refine her dominoes and improve her designs. She says the best way to keep learning is to try different things and see what works.
